Is Gold Consolidating?

Gold eased back a little in Fridays European trading as the greenback steadied against the Euro and sterling and oil was a fraction down after reaching an all time high a shade off $146 a barrel the day before. What we are seeing is gold consolidating at this level.

In a nutshell nothing much happened in precious metal, currency and oil trading while the US enjoyed the Independence Day holiday.

This is an indication that the US has not yet lost its role as by far the most important and influential prime mover of markets.

Gold and Precious Metals on the Move ?

In European early morning trading gold and other precious metals have continued to prosper. Gold has held above $930 an ounce, spiking at $935 before falling back to just above $931, before renewing its assault on $934 an oz.

All the factors that we have mentioned in past weeks still hold good.

A plunging dollar, a soaring oil price and political and military uncertainty throughout the world and not forgetting the threat of food shortages and accompanying inflationary price pressures on man’s basic needs.

Platinum Set To Continue Price Rise

South Africa’s miners are still on course to strike in July, likely to sustain Platinum’s continuing rise in price.

The concern here is that more labor troubles on top of power supply disruptions, coupled with skill shortages, rising transport costs etc. etc., make investing in South African producers a highly dangerous speculation.

It is not surprising that talented mining engineers are abandoning the country for the political and social stability of countries such as Australia and Canada.

South African Mine Workers Plan To Strike

The 320,000 members of the National Union of Mineworkers will join in the Labor Federations plan for a strike next month protesting about the power crises that has disrupted industry and mining throughout South Africa.

With no let up likely for the next two years at least the restricted power supply is putting many jobs at risk and stopping or slowing new projects.

Shortage of Uranium has closed half of India’s nuclear power stations reports the 'Times of India’

The lack of supply appears to be politically inspired by the Communist Party of India vetoing the signing of an agreement to import uranium from the US and local authorities refusal to allow mining for the yellow cake where known deposits are known to exist in the Meghalaya region.

Gold remains trapped in the price band of $850-$900 an ounce but seems set to bounce off the lows for the time being.

We expect a degree of volatility within the band and that will give opportunities for quick in an out trades. Just don’t be caught short of the metal when it makes its expected break to the upside.

Is the Nuclear Sector Due for a Revival?

A research company that specializes in small and mid cap equities has issued a report that expects a 25% upward correction in the price of uranium in the near future.

This positive outlook is due to a global increase in nuclear reactors to 311, up from 222 on stream in Jan 2007.

Add to this the many nuclear plants planned or under construction, particularly in China, the only surprise is that the uranium production and mining and nuclear construction sector has not continued the same upward price path of other commodities in demand.

Commodity Boom Bubble Bursting?

Have you noticed that in the last few days there has been a lot of talk amongst the cognoscenti that we are in a commodity boom bubble that is in the throes of bursting?

The pundits are not yet in full cry but there is a ground swell of 'informed' opinion that is beginning to paint the picture of oil retreating to below $100 a barrel, gold with $750 an ounce in their sights, even the soft commodities that feed the world and which have come off their tops recently are about to plunge.

Bursting bubbles are the latest fashion.

Gold Production Reported To Be On Downward Path

Gold price continues to flat line along the $880-900 boundaries and every now and again threatens to sustain a break through the $900 barrier. That this will eventually happen we have no doubt but in the meantime patience is needed.

Regular readers will know that we have reservations concerning technical analysis although we recognize that the triggering of the more popular indicators often has the ability to drive the market if for no other reason than that so many professional and amateur investors are dedicated to watching lines on graphs rather than considering the latest news.
